                Appears to be an original Japanese grenade, complete with the brass fuze cover, pin & string.....however, I'd say it probably has been repainted from the look of it....at least the black "body"......typically done by Seabees who collected them, disarmed them, and painted them to sell to the rear eschlon troops.....

                Double check it's a DEWAT (unscrew the top from the body).....I've had vet. bring backs that hadn't been deactivated......always a danger with ordnance items.....

                    In addition to the re-paint, I think it has the wrong safety pin and string. To me, the safety pin and string are too "heavy" and look like the ones you see on the Type 89 grenade discharger (i.e. "Knee" mortar) shell. Look closely and you can see how the safety pin has been forced in place, causing damage to the little brass cover that sits on top of the fuze assembly.
