    Wakizashi?

    Hi

Way out of my area here, what exactly have I run into?

    Is it a Wakizashi?

Whats a ball park worth on these?

Should there be any maker marks hidden anywhere in the hardware?

    Thanks
    Dion

            Sword

You have a nice WWII era Shingunto Japanese sword, any cutting edge over 24" is a katana,,,shorter is a wakizashi. The dirk is of a police or possible naval shore patrol type, but I cant find it in the references, particularly in that scabbard. Have you taken the hilt off the sword to see the maker info yet?

              Hi Steve

I have not got them yet, Iam told the blade is at 37, I did learn now that size of the blade determines the name of it, Bear with me Iam a complete newb with this. My German friend tells me if I take the grip off I will find markings.I also guess that this one is machine produced? Are these desirable swords in any way? Or is it sort of like in the Third Reich edged weapons community like finding a Lions Head sword, or is that like comparing apples and oranges?

              Thanks

                Sword

Cant tell about the blade due to poor condition of the polish, scrapes and such, the tang under the hilt will tell alot, has better quality fittings which is usually a good sign, but chances are its Showato or a wartime non traditionally made blade.

                  Hi Steve

Iam just going to have to take a chance and see what is under the hilt, Stu gave me a good website on how to carefully do it and my German friend told me there should be a wedge of bamboo inside that secures the hilt, this is kind of exciting for me instead of the standard Iron Cross gathering.

                    peg

its a bamboo peg that needs to be pushed out. Not sure which web site showed you. the handle slides off after the peg is removed. ill send you a email of the peg.

                      Hilt removal

And be sure and check for which hole in the hilt is larger, push from the smaller hole side.
