Japanese veterans badge question

Hi pick these Veterans badges up with a few other things but was just wondering why the Japanese veteran badges comes in two sizes? is the small one for a cap?

No not for cap. These extremely common badges come in numerous variations and sizes including enameled in red, blue & green.

I don't think these were issued after WW2

I was informed by another collector that the larger badge is earlier (pre-ww2) and the small is for late 30s until the end of ww2.

Can anyone substantiate this?
