I guess I am the only one thus far not kukoo for this. BoB spent the entire first episode building a back story to the characters. This so far has not.

I have read several books on the land battle for Guadalcanal and several on the naval battles surrounding the island. I hope this mini-series does not depict the Marines as the sole fighters in the Pacific as BoB made it seem that Easy Company was the entire Airborne force in the ETO.

The scene where they did some target practice on a solitary Jap did nothing for me.

I am hoping it gets better.

It has been pointed out on another forum that the 03's they are using are 03A3's. That totally escaped me. Just a minor detail but incorrect all the same.

I used to know a 1st Division Marine (BAR Gunner) Vet that was on the island and the stories he would tell would make your hair stand on end! He went from the "Canal" all the way to Okinawa. He still had nightmares +50 years later. He hated the "Nips" as he called them until the day he died.

He was a great man and I admired him for his service. He never understood how he survived all those battles when so many of his buddies "died horrible deaths" as he described it.

I am going to have to agree to disagree with you on this one and really would any of us care if there were 3 or 33 more episodes...

Other beefs I have with this thus far is that it is called "the Pacific", where is the Army (with 22 divisions as opposed to six Marine), where is the Navy? BoB was specifically about one company in one division. This title, "The Pacific" led one to believe it would be on a much grander scale than BoB. I would have loved to see this start @ Wake Island last night with more background on the characters. Then spend a couple weeks on Guadalcanal following either a Navy Pilot or someone on say the Juneau as well as the Marine thing.

Looking at the episode list also makes me wonder why Tarawa is not there.

It is not like the show wasn't Ok last night. I'll be watching the rest.

I liked it! I couldnt believe it was over so fast, felt like I had only watched 15 min at most. Could it be better? Yep, but some of us might be shot or wounded. The part where they were target shooting the Japanes soldier, I think it tried to bring some reality of the war to people. I felt sorry for the guy but might not had I been a Marine there at the time. Who knows except for the ones who were there. I wish a new epsiode was coming out every week for a year.

I must also say that if you don't have surround sound with your hd big screen you don't know what your missing. The battle sounds are really great. The wife said turn it down it's to loud. No way i had a death grip on the controler!

I can't wait until this comes out on dvd for us "non-HBO" persons. TBH, there is a little part of me who wants to see this just in case I come across some middle-aged or younger, non-vet ww2 person talking about "those jap-aneses" or "those nips" based upon the series. I don't think there was any noticible increase in anti-german feelings after BOB, so I hope my fears are unfounded (but I so want to see how the battles are being depicted). But then again my heros are the 442nd RCT, the 100th Battalion, and the MISers who make me proud to be a japanese american.

(I really enjoy the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty video games, though I only get them when I find them in the bargain bin. Yes, I know that ww2 video games themselves are questionable, as is any war game, but for argument's sake, consider it like a ww2 movie at this point. I recall in the recent past a friend had a modded wii with a bunch of games, including one for the Pacific theater - I can't recall which one. It was at a party with many friends and some little kids, mostly chinese americans. It was first time I and he had ever loaded it up, and I can never forget the opening scene: a japanese officer interrogating a US POW in a very graphic manner, then the camp being liberated along with a very graphic death of the said Jpn Officer. Then game play commensed.

At that point,we decided against proceeding with the game, and we switched to rock band. None of the scenes depicted was of something I had not heard about before, but seeing them in the opening of a video game was different to say the least. Anyhow, ww2 genre games are nothing new to me, but that was an entirely different and errie feeling I had that night. )

kaigunair, the game you are talking about is Call of Duty, World at War. It also has the European theater of war too.

Hello everyone.I have been reading these posts and eating my heart out.As you may have guessed,I don't have HBO.I thought i would have to wait months to watch "The Pacific".To my suprise it is being aired tonight on another channel.Channel 101 on Direct TV.Hope this helps other people.Spread the word if this is not common knowledge.Regards,Gerald.

Just finished watching episode one.Could have handled two three hours more.On the downside directv informed it's viewers if we wanted to enjoy episodes two through ten we would have to go to HBO.... hahaha.Oh well,such is life.
