    Japanese sword ID kanji

    This sword belongs to my neighbor,84 year old ,Second division, USMC veteran who brought it back from Saipan..He was shot by a japanese ionfantryman who was accompanying the officer weilding this sword. His buddies saved the sword for him. I am trying to get as much info for him as possible. The blade is very solid as far as nicks, it does have light blemishing..Can someone ID and give me a value range? Thanks guys...

              funny

              from a friend in Japan

              It reads as follows;

              作陽幕下士細川正義 (Sakuyo Bakkashi Hosokawa Masayoshi)

              A retainer in Sakuyo (= Sakushu: 作州 = Mimasaka: 美作), Hosokawa Masayoshi

              Maybe Masayoshi 2nd, a big name in late Edo period, if it is not gimei.

                Hosokawa Masayoshi was a very late Edo period smith, but this example is a gimei. Masayoshi will never sign his name with those hesitating small "chisel" etches. He will sign his name in sweeping single strokes, as any good smith will. File marks are sloppy too.
