I recently picked up some items which were taken from Nissan Island (Green Islands) by a New Zealander who was part of the combined US/NZ force which attacked and occupied the area. Items include a nice Hinomaru Yosegaki flag, pic of the NZ vet and an American vet holding the flag after capture, a letter home to his wife, a photo of a Japanese sailor in uniform taken from a cave, a metal plate removed from a Japanese ship and a nice photo of some other allied soldiers with a couple of great looking Japanese surgical kits and flag. Unfortunately, I didn't get the surgical kits but the photo may be interesting to those who are interested in that area.
I'll post several pics of these now. I would be most grateful if any translations could be given.
The flag is unusual, in that it has had the kanji outlined as you will see - has anyone seen this before? Not sure whether this has been done by the original owner of the flag, or the veteran at a later stage.
Although the pic of the vets holding the flag is not entirely clear, I believe there is enough visible to conclude that it is definately the same flag, and the kiwi vet in the picture is the chap who sent the flag home with the letter and photo. I'd be interested in any comments or observations you may have.
Regards
Russ
