    Japanese Naval helmet

Good evening guys. I would like to hear thoughts and opinions on this Japanese Naval helmet. The Anchor is painted on. The net is present as is the liner, drawstring and cut chinstrap.

My knowledge of Japanese helmets would have plenty of room in a thimble, so I welcome your thoughts.

    Cheers! Dave

How many rows of thread hold the liner together in the back?

I will take a look at this later today and let you know about the rows of thread on the liner.

First of all, let me congratulate you for using the correct terminology for the helmet instead of "NLF Helmet".
As Scott mentioned, we need to see more details of the liner and the rear inner rim of the helmet to be sure if it is indeed a Navy example.
On thing that does look a little odd is the anchor stencil. It almost looks to have been painted around the anchor and the shade of yellow appears to be a bit too yellow, but that could be due to the picture.

Here's a shot of the rear of the liner. Let me know if this helps.

Sorry to say it looks to be an IJA liner. It should have a date stamp on the underside of one of the pads. As CB said in his post it is weird how the stencil anchor looks to be painted around. I have seen an overpainted shell but no effort was made to paint around the anchor. At any rate it is not a standard IJN configuration for a combat helmet.

There is a stamp in there. This was a consignment piece so I am not out any cash. So, we do you think I have here. Post war paint and anchor added? Naval with an Army liner added? Not sure what to think on this one.

                  Thanks, Dave

Without a hands on I really do not know what to think of it. This is one of those that one would need a hands on. The paint looks old but the anchor area is not the norm. What you have based on what we know is a possible Naval shell with an Army liner. Not a standard configuration Naval helmet. Maybe some other members will chime in with some thoughts. Hope that helps.

P.S. An IJN liner will have two rows of thread (two holes on each side) in the back and no date stamp on the inside. An IJA will have three holes on each side (as pictured above) and the date stamp on the inside.

I think somebody may be playing games with you. After a talk with a friend he mentioned he thought these shells were one in the same. I had totally forgot about this one. Looks like he is correct as they look to be the same. I will let you be the judge.

Guess my memory is still intact! This was a shell (missing liner) when it was originally posted. Now it has an army liner with an added net!

Thanks for the additional information. Once I realized something was not correct, thanks to comments on this forum and others, I quickly pulled it off my site. Looks like it is heading back to the owner.
