    Japanese uniform on e-stand

    Hey guys,

My first Uniform purchase from the East!

I just paid for this on e-stand (sans helmet) but wanted to know (perhaps rather belatedly ) what are your thoughts on these? I personally thought the tunics were lighter brown in colour than this one (although I've only been familiar with front line grunts rather than high ranking officiers.

Unless the tunic is named (hand written) on the interior then I'd be suspicious that collar tabs were added post war.

Thanks mate, I'll have a look when it arrives. It was still money well spent when the cost of a repro japanese tunic is US$230!! I got this for not much more than that.

David is correct. It is a tropical shirt not a tunic. Less likely the tabs are correct. The Japanese wore pocket rank tabs on these shirts.

It's an enlisted or NCO tropical shirt of light weight cotton. definitely wartime and appears original. I could narrow it down to an exact date if I saw some clear, up close photos of certain features of the shirt. In anycase, these should be dated near the reverse front seam between the button holes. As mentioned, the insignia may have been added to 'spruce up' the EM shirt and turn it into an officer. Also beware that, reproductions of 2nd variation army officer collar tabs by nakata look like that and are floating around all over the place. I cannot tell from the pictures but the bullion on those tabs 'might' indicate this. Just some stuff to consder - hope it helps.

They will be 44 dated most times

It is a genuine tropical issue shirt as mentioned before. Those tabs have been added at some time well after the war (a Lt. Col. would be rather unlikely to wear one of these type of issue shirts ) and may or may not be original. Rank insignia was more commonly seen on various pocket hangers or patches on these shirts as well. Would need to see those up close and the reverse to determine if they are real or not.
Most of these type of shirts are dated 1944 or 45.

Thanks all that's very informative. I will post pictures when the uniform arrives. Any particular areas you want me to focus on other than insignia/sewing and date marks?

Meanwhile here are a couple of other pics of the original set (i'm not picking up the belt, bottle or helmet at this stage.

IT looks like a good chance that shirt is 41-42 dated, maybe 43. Reproduction insignia can sometimes (sometimes it needs to be held) be identified with a clear macro zoom of front and back but unless you've handled many examples of both orignial and repro, it's very hard to tell. The manner in which they are attached and the thread used also provide clues
