I collect these dog tag too, and i only have a little experience. but i'd noticed some facts,
-three kind of dog tag exist: brass (most usually seen) aluminium and steel.
-they're most of the time stamped: it's the rule of "all or nothing": all stamped, or not, if you find stamps and some hand engraving on the same side = fake. Some soldiers were transfered to diferents units so sometimes you may find some crude hand engraving ONLY on the reverse side, it's OK.
-It seems that units were issued various stamping kits . So on dog tags of different units the stamp for the same numbers or kanjis may vary, but the stamps found on dog tag of the same unit (same allias number) MUST be the same.
-The markings: on the right the allias numbers (a combination of kanji - one or two- for the division, numbers are for the unit). On the middle, the coy? i dunno. On the left, the kanji for number, followed by the soldier's number. Some examples:
垣:16th army division (destroyed at leyte, 630 survivors of 13000 men)
* 垣6550:16th army division
* 垣6551:16th division headquarters
* 垣6553:16th infantry group headquarters
* 垣6554:9th Infantry regiment
* 垣6555:20th Infantry regiment
* 垣6556:33rd Infantry regiment
* 垣6557:16th recon regiment
* 垣6558:22nd Field artillery regiment
* 垣6559:16th Engineers regiment?
* 垣6560:16th Engineers regiment or 16th army division Communication Station?
* 垣6561: heavy weapon group?
* 垣6562:16th army division weapon duty party
* 垣6563:16th army division medical detachment
* 垣6564:16th army division 1st field hospital
* 垣6565:16th army division 2nd field hospital
* 垣6566:16th army division 3rd field hospital
* 垣6567:16th army division 4th field hospital
* 垣6568:第16師団病馬廠 (16th army division illness horse factory=>what the f_ is that!? 6th army division's veterinary unit?)
It's very hard to find the allias numbers for a specifict unit, as many codes can not be found on the web, and if you can... it's in japanese! hope you're fluent in japanese, I'm not!Last edited by adanhael; 09-22-2008, 07:12 AM.

-Sometimes there's no kanji in the allias number. I've got a strange one like that:
Side A
number _______1
3_____2_____3
3_____1_____0
__B________ 1
Side B (old assignment: the allias number zone is sanded, other inscription are crossed out)
number___中
1
4
0______4
I've got it from the estate of a wolfhound vet (pearl harbor- hikam field/Guadalcanal/New geaorgia/luzon).
