The Japanese version of the Soldbuch is named to Tetsuzo Sato, a corpral in a field artillery unit. He received a good conduct citation and there is an inscription in the award column, but cannot be read because the photo is cut off there. This paybook is a pre-WW2 issue version, which would lack Hirohito's rescript on openning the war with the USA. Pay books issued during WW2 have 6 additional pages on the war with the Allies.
The letter appears to be from his father or a brother, which is a new year's greeting, talking about other family members (sister and another brother it appears).

Yes, they are in red, but that is not the point. All the Imperial rescripts in paybooks have been printed in red since the Taisho era. The red pages start with the messages from Emperor Meiji followed by the rescripts from Emperor Taisho, then by Hirohito or Emperor Showa. So over the years the red part got thicker and thicker. When Emperor Showa took to the throne he added 3 pages basically asking soldiers to carry on honoring the instructions from his father and grandfather under his reign as well. Then when WW2 broke out he added the announcement dated December 8th, 1941, which ran 6 pages long.
So the point is whether the red part of the paybook ends with this "Pearl Harbor" rescript. Also, by that time, the paper became rougher, so the thickness of the paybook became roughly 3 times that of a prewar versions.
