if you rotate it counter clockwise 90 degrees:

Ban roku roku = no 66 or (lookout/watch/guard 66)
Wan Ichi nana hachi Ichi = (Bay or Gulf )1781

possibly a soldier of the costal watch?

Cool my dad brought it home from the war. He was at New Guinea Leyte and Okinawa. IIRC all the stuff that came home was from Leyte

This tag uses the post 1940 coding system to obscure the unit identity. It was for a member of a component of the 10th Area Army established on Sept 22, 1944. None of the inft divisions composing this army used the code "Wan", so it must have been someone from 10th Army HQ. Here's some English info

Thanks very much! I guess it came fromOkinawa then. I always assumed that everything my dad sent home was from the Phillipines, as he was wounded on Okinawa although he was there through most of the battle as I have pictures of him dated June '45 on Okinawa.
I've learned a lot on this site in just two days!
