        Sword

Looks like a nice traditional Japanese sword in correct mounts. Too bad about the wrap on the hilt but restoreable. Might take the handle off by removing the peg and see if it is signed and will help date the sword to a specific era. Also measure it from the tip to the notch in the back spine where the habaki (copper sleeve) slides on. Under 24" is a Wakizashi over that is a katana.

Your Sword Has Been Taken Apart In The Past As The Bottom Handle Fitting, Known As A Fuchi, Is Missing. Possibly Check With The Prior Owner To See If They Have It.

You Have An Unsigned Wakizashi Of The Edo Period. The Blade, Is A Mass Produced Unsigned Blade. The Fitings Are Quite Generic And Also Mass Produced. Wakizashi Were Allowed To Be Carried By Not Only Samurai But Also The Merchant Class. Your Sword Likely Belonged To An Individual From Either Group And He Was A Person Of Meager Means.
