Translation help on Japanese sword

I am fairly sure this sword is bad... but... want to know for sure.

It belongs to a friend of mine... and these are the only photos I took.

We did some trading today... but... I passed on this one.

The mei reads "$^*+|@#". This must have been added in the US; a Chinese would have done much better.
