    You describe a person/dealer that one shouldn't buy from. As you said this guy runs a tourist trap, and these cups sound like decorative tourist pieces with no proof that the inscription is genuine or what period they could be from. As you know American soldiers have been stationed in Japan or Okinawa for the better part of 6 decades. To me they just don't sound valuable or collectible. I would recommend passing on them, from your description, i.e., "with small saucers" and no decoration, I'm not even sure they are saki cups. Best of luck. Zach

              Yes on the saucers -- but they must be Japanese characters and very hard to read.

                A typical wedding gift (pair) item; so impractical that they remain mint forever in the box. Sake cups do not come with saucers; these woulf be tea cups making them all the more impractical.
