Actually, the long pipe and small container with tube attached are typical for Japanese (Kiseru to Tabako ire). In the old days of Japan almost everyone had these and they were carried attached to the Obi of the Kimono. They were all different and some older ones are true works of art.

                Thanks for the info.

It does seem to be well made and fairly fancy.

Any one know what the dog tag says??

                Thank you

I have an opium/tobacco pipe very similar to the long smooth slender one you have pictured. It was brought back by one of my grandfathers. He picked it up during the recapture of Corregidor. They would have been an easy item for the Japanese solider to pick up in China.

I'd say most of the stuff was picked up/traded during occupation. The round receipt is for 2 pcs of pearls for the princely sum of 400 Yens, bought at a pearl shop called Matsuya in Kyoto. 400 Yens was a huge amount of money before the war, add that to the fact that a nice pearl shop was already up and running, shows it's well into occupation. I'm not sure but not many combat experienced grunts were stationed in Japan for the occupation for long, were they ?
