It says Honma Saichi (本間佐一）. If you are contemplating a purchase of this piece, by all means do not, since it's a Chinese made fake junk. A lot of these make beleive swords with tang markings of names taken from a Tokyo telephone book or something abounds and is flooding the US market. Don't buy !! -
EDOKKO, PLEASE TELL ME HOW YOU KNOW THIS. IT BELONGS TO A FRIEND YOU SAYS ITS BEEN IN HIS FAMILY FOR A LONG TIME. AT LEAST 30-40 YEARS. I'VE SEEN THE BLADE AND THE MOUNTINGS ITS IN AND I WOULD NEVER SUSPECT WITH THE AGE AND WEAR ON THEM THAT IT ISN'T REAL. ITS NOT FOR SALE. HE WOULDN'T EVEN THINK OF SELLING IT. Perhaps I have jumped the gun on making a split second decision on the orginality of the sword. I have seen many swords coming from China that has a look-a-like mei on the tang that is nothing but a plain Japanese name taken from somewhere.
I would like to second Bob's comment that it would be best to see good photos of the blade and the mountings of the sword. The originality can most likely be determined from there. If it turns out to be original, my deepest apologies !!Comment
