I received this nice hand stitched Japanese Naval Flag about 6 or 7 years ago and would love to know what the writing says if someone could help me? It reportedly came off a small naval vessel in the Philippines. Thanks.

Very strange. That style of writing is in the ancient Chinese style and not normally used in modern writing. The writing is also not done by a practiced hand, so I suspect it may have been copied by a GI or somebody from something he saw. I can make out the word Japan and country, but some of the others may be recognizable by others on this forum.

That is fake Japanese writing done by a non-Japanese to embellish what most likely is a repro flag. The faker copied some characters from a Japanese bill and other items to write total nonsense. The writing style is also one that is not used for handwriting.Comment

Thanks guys,
I thought the writing looked strange and the age of the ink didn't match the age of the flag. The flag is double hand stitched and is made out the same individual course wool/muslin panels that match other flags I have so perhaps someone did add this writing to make it look more attractive as was pointed out? Fake writing but perhaps real flag?Comment

That sucks Andy we have all been there. See any German forum here for more details. I will leave the flag's authenticity up to the expert's here. The flag itself looks fine to me but I only have 3 and do not really look for them unless from a vet. The flag came from another Ebayer but not Cupman. Too bad the ink isn't removable.
