i know nothing about japanese militaria. I saw this flag and couldnt resist buying it for $20. is it wwii? the seller said it was approximately 33 X 27 "

Always hard to tell if a flag like this is WW2 vintage. I have seen so many different flags constructed in a variety of ways....all manufactured before WW2 or during. Your photo is not clear enough to show stitching, corner tabs, tie strings and the like. Additionally, there is no real test that will confirm whether the material is 60+ years old. The material is just too young. If your plain, national flag has blood stains rather than rust, then it's a good bet it's vintage. Twenty dollars would have been a good buy........Mike
