While I have a very limited knowledge of Japanese swords, I see several things the give me concerns. I'm going to copy this thread into the Japanese Militaria section where you will probably get more responses.

I think it's one of those fake Chinese swords made recently.... with the "Damascus blade?"

                    Definitly a Chinese fake.
The Handle (tuska) wrap is very sloppy. The mounts all appear to be cast instead of hand made. There is no artistic fine work to them.( Crispness in detail) The scabbard is not Japanese quality. I have never seen a rayskin covered scabbard that was done so crudely. The skin on this type of work is usually sanded smooth and polished.
I imagine if you had it in hand many other details would jump out at you. Japanese sword mounts and fittings are works of art. The assembledge of parts on this piece and all of the Chinese copies I have seen are very crude. I hope you havn't invested much in this piece. To me it is an inexpensive carnival curio rather than a Japanese samurai sword.

You made a very good decision to ask on this forum first before jumping the gun. A real Japanese sword will never be sold for such a price. Also any Japanese sword sold out of China on E-bay can be considered 100 % fake so no need to even contemplate them. You will also notice some of the Chinese method is to put a low buy-it-now price and gouge the buyer with shipping for several hundred dollars.
