    Helmet Query

    Hi,
I know very little about Japanes Militaria. When I was a kid Japanese Swords, Helmets and Bayonets were fairly common as most families has a son or father who was in the Pacific. One of my uncles gave me a NCO's sword when I was about 9 to play with its rather sad all these old diggers are almost gone. Anyhow back to my question I have a helmet, the liner is a cloth/canvas material held in by 3 rivets similar to German rivets. The chinstrap is cloth helmet was once an olive drab colour and there is a star affixed to the front but not the usual star one sees on helmets. What type of Helmet is this and does it have an value and thirdly what would be a reasonable price to sell it for to another member. Thanks for your (anticipated) replies.
    cheers Robert

It looks to be a civilian model. The liner and chinstrap and helmet shell are the clues. Here is a link to a type 90 combat helmet. You can see the differences are fairly easy to spot. Hope this helps. Value is in the eyes of the beholder, but I'd not go over the $100 mark. There again, I'm not a big civilian helmet collector. Best of luck with the sale. Dave

                Helmet

                Dave,
so the miltary helmets have airholes on the top, and rivets in different positions is this basically correct?, also the liner. Apart from these differences are the shells basically same shape between miltary and civilian helmets. What uses were the civil helmets put to were they meant to be used in combat as last resort etc,
                cheers Robert

                  Robert,
Let me take some more pics of my helmet to help show the shell difference. I now wish I had a civilian helmet in my collection so that I could show the 2 side by side. Give me a few minutes to take 'em and post. Thanks, Dave

The top of the shell has a small ridge in the center running front to back.

Another angle of the ridge. Also the top vent holes.

Symmetrical sides and front and back are a key factor. The civilian models lack this characteristic. They look more asymmetrical when compared to the combat helmets. Also, the rivet placement is totally different. The civilians have rivets over the chinstrap loops where as the combat helmets have the rivets and chinstrap loops inches apart.
