    Some kind of hanger?

The chain is about 25" and it is attached to a Kyu gunto handle.
    This isn't japanese is it?

    Anyone know what it is?

      One last try.
I have seen officers with this kind of device to their pistols but have anyone seen a photo showing a sword with it?

        Erik-
As It Is Marked "Patent Pending," It Is Not Japanese. I Once Encountered A U. S. Army Sword Chain Hanger Attached To The Scabbard Ring Of A Shin Gunto Mounting. The Young Man Who Owned It Said His Father Obtained The Sword In The Phillipines.
If Your Hanger Is Attached To A Handle, It Is Possibly Something Picked Up By A Japanese Officer To Use As A Lanyard Similar To One Used On The Pistol. In History, Items Are Modified By Their Owners To Suit Their Own Needs. These Modification Do Not Always Meet The Expectations Of Today's Collectors.

Well said and true! Thank You for the reply. The gunto has a very old blade, maybe a family blade. He would of course not want to loose it so securing it like this must have been a good idea.
Still, it would be nice to have a picture, just for display.
