    help i.d. this blade

    I am totally lost when it comes to japanese items. I picked up this blade complete with a rough modern homemade handle at a second hand store. The only reason i grabbed it was it had the look of a japanese bayonet... the blade is 9 1/4 inches long... the photo of the characters on the side of the blade is about as clear as i could get. I'd like to know if this is indeed a military item or did i get a new sushi knife for the kitchen?
