Ebay has done to collectibles what ETrade and other online brokerage firms have done to stocks - in a nutshell, it has allowed everyone to play from anywhere, rapidly with a minimum of effort - worldwide. None of this escalation in price makes sense until you put it in that context. It is a market now, just like the stock market. Just like the housing market. This rise could go on for a long time, or in spurts. Prices could slowly level off for a year then continue up or prices could take a dive tomorrow because someone in Italy, Japan, and/or New York doesn't need stock, opps, I meant a helmet (forgive me, my mistake!) tomorrow or next week. The later is probably unlikely but you know what I mean. We can't say our collectibles are worth a certain amount now just because an similar item sold yesterday for x amount. In terms of an investment, I'd love for that to be true. Prices are not static , they are dynamic now. They always were. Now however, it is moving fast and highly visible so everyone sees it, talks about it, and it fuels the fire. You also have fresh money and interest entering that wasn't there before and that is setting new precedent in prices I'm sure - much of this is encouraged from cross-promoting & buying within computized auction format. Over the long term, as is true with anything original that isn't made anymore, good stuff will trend up. But to assume the price is set at a certain amount from this point just because an item sold for that amount, it not quite entirely true I think. Classic supply and demand also. Plus each case is different depending on what it is. This is a difficult period for everyone. Those who have been in it for a while have a renewed appreciation for what we have. How far this is going to go, I don't know. Reese

DAK, if you are referring to me as "the big helmet collector", I also collect small size shells... and no, I didnt sell any helmets to ROBB, and furthermore, I gave up trying to make any sense of your discombobulated diatribe. Is it just me, or is there anyone else out there who cant make sense of his rantings? As a sidenote, I just purchased a beautifull, original 1st pattern cover, helmet, and issue net, for $2025.00 Imagine that! Perhaps if some of you spent as much time networking, and building relationships with the Japanese collectors who regularly buy/sell/trade these kinds of helmets, as you do blabbing nonsense, you would know, that these types of rigs, are available, much more often than you think.

The value of networking and real collecting prior to ebay - well stated.

Still at $4050. You could get a really nice SS Boker for that kind of cash from JR!!! I do agree that supply and demand have a lot to do with these inflated prices on all militaria. But I am of the opinion that all things come to he who waits, course you gotta have the money on hand and snatch up a good deal. As the devil's advocate, I also understand that sometimes if you want it...you gotta pay for it and as a COLLECTOR, not just an INVESTOR, that given time the piece if its a solid piece will probably appreciate to what you paid for it. PROBABLY..... Of course when it comes to Japanese side of militaria collecting I am a novice so I am giving my opinion based on TR blades over the past 8 years.

For the cash that helmet sold for (not sure what the ending bid was) I would rather by a first-class ticket to Iwo Jima and find my own helmet lying in a cave! At least you would know its history...
