Where do those of us with more money than time fit in? It's not a question of being lazy, just being prudent with the limited time we have in a day/week/month/year. I go to two major shows a year and spend like crazy if the things I am looking for are there. I watch the e-stand and dealer websites and haven't seen anything like the helmet rig in question for sale anywhere.Originally posted by Dean Brock View Post

There is an old saying, quality is remembered long after price is forgotten. This can be a driver and can give satisfaction when paying what appears to be over the odds. If I believed this to be unique, rare or interesting in some special way, I too would bid. However, as has been stated before, I cant see how to prove these components were originally together and individually they dont account for the price. There may be the satisfaction of owning something from someone elses collection who one my respect from past knowledge (this often happens in antiques and art - this is from the collection of...). The price gets to this level because at least 2 folk believe this set is worth the value. As someone else said, they dont always turn up!Comment

I know this thread is about the helmet, not people within the hobby, but I am neither handicapped (and I thank God for that) or geographically limited. I just choose to spend the time that others pass on e-bay, at garage sales, etc looking for that proverbial "needle in a haystack" doing other things. Kind of the same way I would rather pay someone to take care of my lawn than spend a whole day each week are doing it myself. I don't think I'm better than the yard man (or anyone else for that matter!), but between my job and family, I have other things I want or need to do.
Christopher was spot on when he said, "He who waits without strategy, gets nothing. I believe you will have a very, very long wait if your strategy is to acquire a nice, desirable helm at a giveaway price."
My collection is a priority, just not my only priority. Suggesting that others who feel the same way are "AHoles" or have "...more money than sense" doesn't paint an accurate picture.Comment

Yes, much of this goes back to the Para helmet debate. Don't believe the hype and smokescreen. It was an arguement over the unethical bidding practices of a few that artificially inflated the end result of the auction. Those few think they can bully and intimidate others by throwing around cash and making threats .Their game is to inflate their bids and then retract bids to get other bidders to get squeamish and submit and tap out of an auction. Instead, because of the items true rarity it just caused the bidding to increase. It continues to this day on ebay by some of the same players. (by the way its against ebay rules). Many of these players like to say that their not afraid to bid an items worth, but they continually contact sellers with requests for a buy it now price. Why don't they put their money where ther mouth is and let the items true price come to fruition. Because its all a smokescreen.Those that know me can attest that I will never be bullied or intimidated by a worm.
I was the second highest bidder of that para helmet at $12,900.00 (so there goes your theory that I want something for nothing), the highest bidder was later to admit he bid $25,000.00 to win. Hats off to him
He won a RARE piece and had the means to do it, but most importantly, he did it ETHICALLY and with HONOR.
