In response to Josh' inquiry, there was quite a bit of bantering back and forth on this subject a while ago on this forum. The caps usually came with rather fragile string loops sewn to the outside of the caps in 4 places which were to take the hooks found on the back of the havelock.
In practice however, it was actually more common for the soldiers to stitch on the havelocks in various manners to the sides of the cap. Those flimsy loops would not last long and unless the spacing of the havelock hooks matched closely those of the loops, it wouldnt fit right either. Photos often show the havelocks tucked up under the caps when not wanted.
