Help needed on 2 Japanese medals

I was wondering what order (or level) the rising sun medal was shown here? Also is the other one a red cross medal of some sort? Would both of these be pretty common? I'm trying to figure just how screwed & tatooed I was in a recent trade. I can figure value on the rising sun one maybe if I know the level. The red cross one I have no idea about. Also is the purple lined hinged box a WWII issue on the rising sun medal? Any indication of approx. value would be appreciated but if not I'd like to ID them -- thanks

          Hi Dennis-
Rising Sun 8th class medal and Red Cross award just as you thought. Both very common. Paul Murphy described the difference in period and post-war cases a few weeks back. You can find that thread by doing a search. The Red Cross medals usually sell for between $20.00-$35.00 on ebay. The Rising Sun in the 8th class usually sells for arround $45.00-$65.00 there as well depending on the day. If I am too far out of line on the values there will be others who will set me straight! Mike

I believe Mike is correct. I've paid a little less for uncased ones, but I'm in Japan, and there really isn't much interest in collecting their own country's militaria here. Or maybe I just got lucky.

This particular Rising Sun dates from the period between 1941 and 1945, during which time they used the silver coloured lid inscription. Earlier (and post war) examples have the inscription in gilt.

The prices quoted are about right but the Red Cross can be got cheaper (about $15-20) if you are willing to look around a bit.

                Best regards,

                Paul

Well, you get the Red Cross one uncase for $5 if you look around online and Ebay.
