I have a very salty navy ratings green tunic and cap that were combat pickups.
The cap is one of the supposedly dyed white ones with the black anchor.
It does look like it was possibly dyed, but hard to tell for sure because of the condition.
My tunic also has officer style buttons, so my feeling is that they used what ever buttons they had without regard by the later years of the war.
The navy was not as consistant in quality or regulations with regard to their uniforms as the army was during the later years of the war. They didnt have the funds.
BTW, the navy caps never had loops for havelocks. The few personel that used them pre or early war probably had army ones they somehow got but we will likely never know for sure, and they attatched them to the caps personally.
Great pants by the way!

Thanks cbuehler and the others for the information exchanged here. I would guess that an other ranks tunic (as Eric mentioned) coupled with officer's buttons would imply as cbuehler suggests that the jacket may be a "parts" jacket, assembled out of necessity during the War. Of course, it could be a modern "parts" jacket I guess, but I would doubt that. Thanks John for the download on the naval rates. It is plain to see good from bad when you have something to compare it to... I am glad the pants provided some interest. The next thing I need to do is remove the repro/misplaced rate from the arm of the jacket. Mike
