I have no idea if this has been covered here before and I have overlooked it, but I want to start a thread on Japanese militaria reference books to serve as a bibliography for us beginning collector's and advanced alike who may not be aware of a specific title. This is to include uniforms, field gear, medals etc. The only exceptions would be be books on Japanese swords and firearms because I believe that these would deserve threads of their own.
Many times beginning collectors to which I include myself, will post questions that could have easily been answered by having the appropriate reference material handy to help make an identification, uses of , branch of service etc. A well known collector on this forum gave me some advice and it rings true, " Buy the Book before you buy the item" So with that, I will start with those titles that I am aware of, and if I am off on any of the titles please correct me. Everyone is sure to have something to throw into the mix so type away.
Uniforms and Equipment of the Imperial japanese Army in World War II by Mike Hewitt, 2002 , Schiffer books
Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Uniforms and Equipments, by Nakata
In the name of a Living God ( Japanese medals , civic), by P.L. Murphy and S.L Ackley
A DICTIONARY OF MILITARY TERMS
English - Japanese and Japanese - English
Lt.Col. H.T.Creswell, et al (1942)
A publication of the University of Chicago Press, this unique, scholarly reference fills a needed gap when translating military materials. Unlike conventional Japanese-language dictionaries, this was prepared specifically with contextual references to military use. An effective tool to draw from your bookshelf for research, it affords the reader the important perspective and insight to both period and application.
