Help with Kanji Translation (Single Character) on Civil Defense Helmet . . .

Just picked up this nice civil defense helmet in what looks to be in near unused condition. It has a rack number "18" under the skirt and a single Kanji character on the from that I cannot decipher. Help with translation would be appreciated. Ari gato gozay masu!

That Kanji usually mean to separate.

I think in this case it might mean "squad" or "section"???
