Help ID Character on Bayonet Handle??

Can someone help ID these characters on an early Nagoya contract bayonet? It almost looks recently "woodburned", but the rest of the baonet is also in very nice shape. PS--This is not a training bayonet. Thanks.

I can not make out the markings on the grip in photo 1. However, the marking on the grip in photo 2 looks like the kanji for YOO or tsutsuga(naku) which can mean safely or in good health.
