Its a legit flag. Stories are just stories though unless there is some provenance. Ask for some supporting docs or anything else that can place the flag on Saipan.

I had a nice flag that I wanted to return to next of kin. I sent the Japanese Consulate in L.A. photo's of the flag. Within a month or so they were able find the next of kin. I sent the flag to the Consulate and they sent it to the family who were kind enough to send me a letter telling me about their great Uncle who went missing on Iwo. The Japanese government is really motivated to do this if you are willing to return the flag. My deal with the Japanese was if they could not find next of kin I would keep the flag.
