Recently I have looked into my old collection. Have felt guilt for never pursuing the translation or at least identification of some things.. Got the idea to try new technology not available 15 years ago. Translation apps!!
But I dont trust the result.. See for yourselves.

Could someone be kind and let me know if they can identify the document types?
Do they even have anything to do with an award?
(maybe just a noodle recipe?)

Ill unfold and make better pictures if wished for. They are rolled up and Very stiff, seem fragile. I barely dare to do it.

陸軍歩兵中尉從七位松本義一
Army Infantry 1st Lieutenant, 7th Class Court Rank, Matsumoto Yoshikazu

Participation in the Meiji 37/38 Year War [1904-05 Russo Japanese War]

Invested in the Order of the Golden Kite 5th Class 金鵄勲章功五級, with a pension of 100 yen; as well as awarded the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Rays (5th Class) 勲五等雙光旭日章

Dated Meiji 39th Year, April 1st.

The other document is not filled in and begins with 天皇陛下ハ 巨... "His Imperial Highness ... Minister " ... etc. It is issued from 賞勲局 the Awards Bureau.

I am so glad I finally put the documents here. Will make sure to print the translation and store with the order so that Matsumoto is not forgotten again.

Reading between the lines here, considering how beat up this order is. Matsumoto proudly wore this order and his (now missing) Rising Sun for many years, all the way into retirement, eventually collecting 300 yen (annually?). Living to old age. Happy ending!

But one question about the second document. What could it be about?

Japanese counting is complicated. In this case it's pretty straightforward; let's use a notional number that is sandwiched between the word for number: 番号 [bangō]. In this accounting the numbers are placed between 番 "number" and 号 the "ordinal" (i.e. 3rd; 1st; 2nd, etc.)

The red letters in the template tell the person filling out the form how to format the document. Your doc does not have an issue number, so perhaps another document was completed and has been lost. This blank template might have served as a cover when the certificate was rolled up.

Maybe Tom can tell more since his expertise is in old Japanese documents.
