The flag looks to be a period piece and quite common. It is not specifically intended for anything other just a flag to fly during patriotic functions etc.
Mostly for civilian use.
The box is unfortunately not identifiable as the markings and interior components are gone. I can see the vets labeling for mailing it home just like a box my father used to send his stuff home in as well.
On my fathers box the original markings are still legible (oxygen equipment parts), but it is quite different from the box shown here.
The Japanese had many such types of wooden boxes and they were popular to use for shipping things home in due to their sturdiness.
