I have had this Japanese pouch for some time and was never able to identify just what it was used for. I always thought it was a tool roll but any help in identifying just what it is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and best regards.

Mercuric chloride tablets

Syphilis was frequently treated with mercuric chloride before the advent of antibiotics. It was inhaled, ingested, injected, and applied topically. Both mercuric-chloride treatment for syphilis and poisoning during the course of treatment were so common that the latter's symptoms were often confused with those of syphilis.

Also used as a topical antiseptic.
