    Joint security area.

    Hello guys,

I want to ask a question. I know its more to do with the modern korean army, however i was just wondering if there is any Republic of Korea Army Special Warfare Command units that were/still are stationed at the joint security area/ DMZ?

Thanks for any info and help.

    No.

Since 2018 The 'JSA" Joint Security Area is now just a very odd tourist trap.

Both sides limited to 35 unarmed guards and 1 armed (side-arm) officer.

From a Korean friend of mine who managed to chat with one of the ASK guards found out that most are near end of service MPs who had excelled in Taekwondo.

Gone are the good old day when I visited in 85. I needed a letter from the Canadian Military Attache stating I was a responsible person of sound mind etc. At that time they took this seriously my traveling companion had a Cuba visa stamp on it, from a vacation the winter before, and she was denied entry.

Cameras where impounded before you got on the bus and only 1 official photo taken of the tour group by a signal corps photographer as you where getting back onto the bus in front of the sign. The best part was the 45 min briefing by a US Master Sargent, who had enough service ribbons and qualification brevets to sink a battle-ship, about the 200000+ mines in the area and what to do in case of shelling etc.

      Ok thank you very much.

Quite interesting to hear about this. I didnt even know about the guards themselves!

Still, there is 2 koreas, so there will be a 38th parallel.

Anyways, to add more context as to why i ask, is because i have a digital camo uniform that has a joint security area patch on it. The camo is used by South koreas special forces and the trousers/pants that came with the top is dated to 2010. I just wanted to know if someone may have any reasonable conclusions as to why that maybe. Looking at it, my guess is its a commerical copy. Anyways thank you for your input. Interesting to say the least

Hmm ROKSOF at Pusan. That doesn't jibe with what I know of. When the ROK forces took over 99% of the duties in 2004 it was a single batallion made up of near term conscripts.

Units did not rotate though the posts rather conscripts rotated though the unit.

ROKSOF served much longer that regular ROC conscripts like 4~8 years rather than 1~2 it would be a waste to put such higly trained soilders on such duty.

I wont doubt your information, From what is gathered here thats its only just men who are nearing the end of their service. Its possible (however take it with a pinch of salt) there may have been a unit just in case NK does something nearby, this is only just a theory and im happy to be proven wrong.
