19th Century French Tunic & Kepi

    Hello everyone,

I need your help with this tunic and kepi " http://www.todocoleccion.net/militar...-xix~x48421032 "

Is it Army Officer´s Tunic and hat? or could it be a fireman jacket? They look similar to me.

Which period could it be from, and do the tunic and Kepi go together?

    Thanks very much in advance.

    Best regards,
    Adolph.

Looks like French cavalry and a fairly senior officer, I think. Full dress tunic and I suspect that the two lines of stitching running vertically up the front of the kepi may indicate a leather patch on the inside meant to hold a plume. Late nineteenth century?

There was a 10th Curaissier Regiment in the French Army but I don't know nearly enough about French uniforms to say more.

Thanks very much for your quick replay.

I was worried about the tunic being gendarmerie, firemen or any other but military.

For what I´ve found on the web, the kepi has Colonel´s ranks. Am I right? About the tunic rank, is it the braid on the sleeves what denotes the rank?

      Best regards,
      Adolph.

I believe this would be for a captain ( three lines of braid on kepi) of the train, or supply service, given the dark blue rather than black kepi & tunic.
While French officer kepis & tunics of heavy cavalry, infantry, artillery & others was officially dark blue, in practice, they were black. Train was an exceptiom, I believe.

          Thanks very much.
Correct. Captain rank in the kepi braid and the tunic sleeves.
About the branch service, I still haven´t found anything on the web.
Hopefully someone will let me know.

          Best regards,
          Adolph.

I', assuming cavalry based on the styling - heavily frogged a la hussar tunics - but, as I said, French is not my field. Colonel looks about right for the number of lines of braid on the sleeves - I believe that's how it works, with each line added indicating a jump in rank.

Three lines of braid on kepi = captain, same rank with three lines of braid on the tunic.
Shade of blue is too dark, at least on my monitor, for light cavalry sky blue, and heavy cavalry tunic for officers would be black, although officially dark blue.

                Hello
nice uniform at a very fair price!!! even with moth hole!!
It 's a "Dolman modèle 1872" for a captain of "train des Equipages" (logistic)
                with a nice "Képi foulard"

Thanks very much all of you. Very helpful.

I´ve been doing some research on the web, and found out that the dolman was in use until 1902.
I guess that´s why the kepi emblem is a (grenade) instead the unit number as in the tunic collar.
Also I´ve noticed that the kepi chin strap is missing. Which color should it be?

                  Thanks very much.

                  Best reagards,
                  Adolph.

The chin strap of the kepi has to be silver.
You can remove the grenade. The grenade was used on parade uniform since 1886 with a plume. But for the "Train des Equpage", the emblem was a five branches star.

You can put a cartridge officer too on this dress. Like this:

                      Hello
The grenade is perfectly right on this kepi, don't remove it

Actually I´m working on the chin strap.

Michmuch, you're right the Grenade is in good place. Sorry for my shamed mistake.
But it looks like gold on the photo...
