Latin American Militaria?

Does anyone collect Latin American militaria? I know that many of those countries have some hellacious regalia. Might be an interesting field

Decorations

I've seen a few S. American orders & decorations, they sure look spectacular ......... From a distance. Take a good look and the quality, er, well, remember those plastic sheriff's stars you got with that kid's cowboy outfit.......just a little better. They have that anodised, plastic look about them. Probably there are some well made examples, particularly early ones. Some of their patches look great, had a set of Ecuadoran para wings once, (Why ? Lord knows ), and they were reasonable quality.

I can't remember the Canadian medal dealer who had alot of South American awards. He seemed to have everything but German. It was a little odd that he didn't carry any 3rd Reich but he did have a great selections from everywhere else. His first name started with a U or was that his last name? It will come to me sooner or later.
He had the one of the highest Mexican awards, "The Order of the Aztec",which was a massive and beautiful neck order.

The Latin American decorations that N.S. Meyer made were pretty chintzy. Argentinian, Chilean and Brazilian tend to be nicer. Regular insignia also tends to be lower quality. I have a lot of elite unit insignia and jump wings from almost every Latin American country, but not having been a 7th Group or Team 2 guy, I didn't do too much training with the LatAms, so I didn't get much through horse-trading.

As for decorations, I have a Peruvian Knight of the Military Merit Order, a Paraguayan Commander of the Military Merit Order, an Argentinian Knight of the Military Merit Order and this little baby from Cuba, the First Class of the Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes:







The scan isn't that good, but this is an exquisitely well-made pre-Revolutionary (possibly pre-World War Two) piece, made by "Antigua Vilardebo y Riera" of Havana.

Here is the Paraguayan National Order of Merit (Orden Nacional del Merito), Paraguay's highest award for civil and military merit. This is the commander's grade. It is well-made in gilt and enamel.



Here is the Peruvian Cross of Military Merit (Cruz Peruana al Merito Militar). This one is an example of lower quality Lat Am awards; it feels like aluminum.

This is the Chilean Cross for 1879-1880, in gold for officers, with a bar "Tacna". This was awarded for the War of the Pacific, when Chile fought Bolivia and Peru.

When I was stationed in Panama, a few years after the invasion, I was able to pick up some items from the one-time Panamanian Defense Forces. HALO wings, HALO instructor, scuba badges and scuba instructor to name a few. All have since been sold on ebay. The only thing I have left of my S.American collection are Gen Noriegas business envelopes which were taken by my company at the Commandancia.

Here is a "baby" from a Brazilian private collection. It was used just at the end of Triple Alliance War, XIX Century ( Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina against Paraguay ).

just a little thing,
my airforce pilot wins, awarded when I complete the military pilot training, my wins actually looks better than scan shows.
I have more Latin American awards, awarded to my father ( General of our army). I will post some photos.

Gary :Where in Panama where you?

While i was stationed in Panama(1/508) i picked up some PDF stuff but I have know idea where it is,I also Got some Hondouran para beret's that I snagged off a few guys for a pack of smokes,I was at soto cano air base in Hondo (this is where the Hondo airforce trains if you can call them an airforce)and I could have sworn that the Hondouran airforce trains on M109's I was there for 6 months never saw them fly but under their cammo nets you can see the planes,could never get real close but i'm pretty sure they were 109's.
I'm sure you were there Andy,What do you think?
