    A "Mysterious" Bulgarian

A circa WW1 Military Merit Order-Knight, on the war ribbon-- or IS it?

This ribbon, which is an ancient silk original (the pale blue is almost bleached out) has got GOLD bullion threads, not regulation SILVER ones. It isn't tarnish or nicotine stain or anything like that-- the gold is just the same when I turn the ribbon inside out, all over!

This Order was always bestowed with swords, even for peacetime merit (in which case it had a white yellow and black striped ribbon). From late 1916 a green enamelled "war decoration" wreath (like the one on the Austro-Hungarian Red Cross Decorations) could be fitted around the center, but I've never encountered one of those yet.

Notice that rectangular dark stain right smack in the middle of the ribbon? That's because the dealer (may the fleas of a thousand camels nestle in his crotch!! ) slapped a gummy, sticky, ICKY price tag on there. Uncle Ricky's still trying to get it off without tearing the frail ribbon apart! moremad (I use those hard paper tags with string, looped through something like the suspension ring, when I am Pretending To Be A Dealer, aaargh!)

Close up of the obverse-- oddly enough, this was all over "bronze" tarnish on the silvered metal parts, which the merest breath of gentle cleansing reveals to be silver. I have noted a similar odd tarnish phenomenon with Soviet Orders of the Red Banner, which can appear to be silver with all gilt "worn away" and yet gentle cleaning brings their gold right back up!

Yup! Guess that old dried up mummified gummy tag on the BACK of the ribbon wasn't obvious enough! People-- DON'T DO THAT!!!!

Little bit of ring flaking, possibly from age as much as wear. These are big heavy pieces, with domed 3-D enamel on the arms (rather like a blunt diamond lozenge in cross section, however they did that!).
