French Cloth Item !?! (Scratches Head)

    Hi Everybody,

I picked this up recently: what I believe is an item of French insignia, incorporating the Sacred Heart. Other than that I'm lost. Any ideas?

I had initially thought it was an armband: however, upon receipt, I'm no longer sure about that theory.

    Anyway, all help appreciated.

    Thanks for looking.

    Best regards,
    Toby.

        Hello O.

Thank you for replying. Please can you tell me something about Vandea. Nearly all of the search results were in Italian so I'm still uncertain of its significance.

        Kind regards,
        Toby.

Hello, look for VENDEE, this insigna was used by Vendéen soldiers and CHOUAN after revolution...
          to resume :
after French revolution, people of the western province of France (Vendée, Bretagne...) were for King, and Catholic Church, they fought against revolution.
          This was their insigna.

            Hi

Vandea is a french region. All i know about is that this region fighted against the French Revolution and i know is a strictly observance catholic region.

              Hi toby,

It looks like a "Chouan" flag. Beetween april 1792 and 1793, French troops were fighting against other european troops. Vendean people didn't accept to fight for revolution regim, and so they did secession. They were fighting "for God and King" against the french army. They surrended in 1793. I join two pics. Hope that i help you
              Cheers

                    O., Herlé, Pierre,

Thank you very much for replying. It is all much clearer now and quite fascinating. When I bought the piece, I (going by the seller's description), had thought it was connected with WWII. Only about 160 years out - oh well!

It appears to be made of silk which I suppose would be appropriate for the timeframe. I also wonder how it would have been displayed, since it is fairly small.

Given the age, is it fair to assume such a piece is uncommon?

                    Best regards,
                    Toby.

                      Toby,
sorry but i don't think this piece is 160 year old, why ?
-because this piece is on French (Blue, white,Red) flag, wich was the flag of the revolution, royalist use white Flag with "fleur de lys" - Sorry Pierre but VENDEEN and CHOUAN are not the same(same period, but not the same place) VENDEEN are for the army of Vendée, CHOUAN are for the army of Brittany they to fight together against revolution with the help of Great Britain)
-The Sacré Coeur in French Flag is very common since the end of XIX century in the army for Catholic/Nationalist Officer... it's a long story....

I think it's a little flag for Officer maybe WWII or before...
                      Hope it help

Doh (another Homer moment)! Yes, I should have known at least this much.

Anyway, thank you for the clarification, Herlé.

                        Best regards,

                          Hi all,

Of course, you're right, Herlé ! I just tried to explain origin of the emblem.
( sacré-coeur ). About your flag, i find a similar one ( see pic ) used by french troops on 1916.
                          Hope it's help you
                          Cheers
