This is NOT a Finnish Air Force cocade.

This exact type of cocade has been for sale att militaria.321 for several years, also under the headline Finnish Air Force cocade.

So I know some things about Finnish Air Force items, but I wouldn´t consider myself an expert on the area, so when I first saw this cocade I contacted some of the Finnish Air Force experts in Finland and they told me that this cocade has nothing to do with the Finnish Air Force.

I have been trying to solve the puzzle exactly what type of cocade this is, but no solution yet.

              Funny,
while searching for this I found a Page on this topic showing a Sidecap with exact the same Cocade on. Please ask your Guy's for a Pic of A Siedecap worn from 1918 to 45. I don't talk about other Era's.

Please post the link to the page.

Is it in wear in a period picture from 1918-1945?

This is very interesting, the guys I asked could be wrong, that is of course possible.

It would be nice to see a period picture of a Finnish Air Force soldier wearining this cocade.

I thought this was the old version of the Finnish Air Force sidecap cocade? Maybe there are several different versions?

1939-44 during the Winter and Continuation War they used the standard tin cocade for enlisted men and the red enamel lion cocade in combination with enamel national cocade on the sidecaps. Like shown in the second pic

That has nothing to do with the Finnish air force. Whatever it is.

This suggestion that it was a 1920s good luck symbol has merit. I have recently seen hallmarked [1921, 1927] silver christening sets from England with swastikas on them. It was used by many cultures including Hindus and some of the North American tribes as a sun symbol. In the '20s, after Kipling became very popular and the Indian Army was remembered for it's part in WWI, swastikas were much in vogue. Then the NSDAP came along!

As said, not just a national or a NAZI symbol. My two cents worth!

Before nazis, swastika was very common symbol especially in Scandinavia and Baltics. You can find in dozens of different places - in dozens of different types.

Hey, maybe mine is from the Irish Airforce.

A quick search only revealed a graphic someone made of a swastika attributed to the Finnish AF, 1928. Until you see another example I'd say its a good luck charm, with a chance of it being a cockade.
