I like them..when i was a kid I got one of the full sized ones at a pa. flea market for 6.00 I think it was near williams grove raceway. Nice scoop...especially the meneature, and to have even a piece of the box is the shiz-nick! I have always felt these were always underpriced ... (you forgot to show the reverse of the medals) The cross on top of the crown always wear into the ribbon when they are old and really awarded, as this set are..

What was this medal issued for and what is the date on it ?

It was a medal for veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. Upon the family's return to power, Napoleon III honored Napoleon I and the veterans who served under him with the Saint Helena Medal. Combatants still living in 1857 were awarded this medal. The obverse shows the Emperor in profile and the edge with his name. The reverse inscription reads: Campagnes de 1792 a 1815, a ses compagnons de glorie sa derniere pensee St Helene 5 mai 1821.

Napolean had actually decided shortly before his death in St Helene to leave all his estate to his soldiers to be split between all the survivors. Unfortunatly Louis XVIII had confiscated Napoleon's estate, so thanks to Napoleon III at least the vets received this medal .

Did you obtain it locally ? Meaning in the US ?

I had always love the Ste-Helene medal, its the first french piece I had buy few years ago....Now I have a few dozen of french medal from the Empire to WWII and its keep going on!!! In some way this one was responsaible for the addiction...

Never had the chance to find the box or the mini to complete my set! Its a great thing that you have there!
