Here's a book you should get, it has all of the side caps, insignia, shoulderboards etc for the French army and Colonial army 1943-1956...

Histoire et Collections 'L'Armee Francaise 1943-1956 d'apres le TTA 148'

            By Paul Gaujac.

            http://livres.histoireetcollections....1943-1956.html

Its an illustrated technical guide to all of the uniforms and insignia worn during that period. Very good.

1- If its black: Metropolitan Artillery - if its dark blue: Metropolitan Infantry
            2 - Chancellerie (Legal department?)
            3 - Colonial Infantry
            4 - Materiel (support services)
5 - Service des essences (technical and fuel supplies)
            6 - Train (Logistics)
            7 - Chasseurs a Pied (Light infantry/scouts)
            8 - Dragons (Cavalry)
            9 - Intendance (stewards)
