    French war merit cross???

I was in an antique store the other day and I saw a slighly smaller WMC 2nd class with swords with french writing on the obverse and the year 1939 on the reverse. It was suspended from a triangular shaped ribbon that was yellow and brown (i think). The dealer was asking $95.00 for it. Does this have anything to do with Germany??

Not that I'm aware of, the only foreign connection with the KVK is Spain I believe where a version was produced, the wreath being seperatly applied and the back arms flat and devoid of detail (bar, the wreath and date of course) in terms of a KVK 2.

      Kind regards,

      Marcus

        HI Guys

Thanks. This was definalely French. It said something like" the republic of France" on the obverse and 1939 on the reverse. The shop also had a KVK2 there so I held them side by side. The french one was somewhat smaller and better detail to the sword handles. Other than the ribbon, size, and writing to the obverse they were almost identical.

This is a 1939 Croix de Guerre, the main French decoration for bravery and merit. The devices on the ribbon represent the level of command at which the soldier was cited - bronze palm (Army), gold star (army corps), silver star (division) and bronze star (brigade/regiment). As far as I know, 1939 Croix de Guerre aren't that rare or expensive. I haven't priced any lately, but $20-$40, depending on condition and devices, seems about right.

            Hi Dave
Thanks. Thats what I saw except the ribbon was a yellow color which may have been due to fading. the price was 95, but there was a 2nd French Medal that came together in one case. I have never seen it and thought that maybe it was a Medal given to the french by the germans.
