I don't claim to be an expert on Japanese swords, but other than the hanger fittings on the scabbard there is nothing about this sword that makes it look military.

It's not military. Everything looks like it doesnt fit right, the wrap and tsuba look cheap. Strange looking blade.

I have a feeling that is one of those Chinese swords that have swamped the japanese militaria section of ebay. This sword only superficially resembles a Japanese sword.

This Japanese site has good photos of all the features of military swords. The Japanese language section has tons more photos. The only reservation I have about this site is that all the swords look to have been refinished,as all the fittings are in mint condition, and I have never seen a military sword in such condition as these. Anyway, they do show in great detail what a military sword should look like.

                      Swastikas, no less...

But you gotta love the swastikas on the scabbard! They were allies, ya know...
