    Serbo-Croat Black Legion Patch

Thought I'd post this for interest. Its quite modern but perhaps some of you have an interest in the recent Balkan wars.

This patch was given to me by my uncle who did a tour in Bosnia in the early 90s with the UN forces. Wasn't pretty apparently as under their mandate they had to stand and watch while Serbian special forces men swigged Sliwovitz and shot dead women and children in front of them.

This patch was taken from such an outfit, known as the Black Legion (Legija translates to 'legion') which was apparently a very feared unit notorious for atrocities.

From what he told me, there was a lot that went on there that none of us heard about in the media. The patch is printed on very thin felt and has been torn from a uniform. Does anyone have insignia from this time that they could post?

I would agree...looks like an early patch from a non-government,non-sanctioned paramil. unit...generally the early patches were a bit crude, even for the government units...but afterwards they made some nice patches, numbering eventually in the hundreds with regard to different designs.

Yep, loads of different multi-coloured patches around today, quite distinctive nylon woven jobs with a kind of charcoal coloured nylon "felt" backing, made in Croatia & featuring not just their own forces designs but multi-national miltary & police units who are / were based there & in Bosnia.

One of most amazing things related to patches from last war in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina is that there are already lots of reproductions. They are produced in Bosnia.I think that more than 90% of those patches on eBay are fakes!

Thanks guys for the information. Faked already?!! There must be a market for these things now let alone 60 years down the line!

Does anyone any examples of original patches that they could post?

I was in Sarajevo in 93-94 and already there were hundreds of badges (fakes) on sale to the UN soldiers.

There is no big difference between fakes and originals, only in some material types, etc.I have HOS patches collection(around 15 different patches) and I know that all of those are originals since I got them directly from HOS soldiers.
