Perusing ebay, I came on this:

Not having seen its like before, I am assuming it's a decoration or order because of the multi piece construction. So, what it it?

Unfortunately, I think it's just costume jewelry. But it's pretty cool-looking, isn't it?

Looks like a Japanese or Chinese breast star to me. I've never encountered a piece of costume jewelry modeled after an order that was as well made as this example.

Costume jewelry. The "Sacred Treasure"-style badge was produced by a company called "Coro" in a variety of colors and sizes. This one is a liitle more intricate than their usual product, but costume jewelry in any case.

Coro has made the breast stars of the US Legion of Merit chief commander (marked "C-12"),so they have the capaibilty to make halfway decent stuff, but costume jewelry pays the bills.

Thanks, I knew someone would have the answer. It was confusing because the construction said "order or decoration" but there were no mottoes or symbols, and the craftsmanship wasn't very high order.
