Published by Libreria Editorial San Martin, Madrid. 310 pgs. softcover. Text in Spanish only.
This is the "Standardwerk" on Spanish military hand weapons of the period. It covers swords, machetes, halberds, lances, bayonets, & firearms, & includes a detailed glossary. Each weapon is described, critical dimensions & weights, along with pertinent data, are provided, & each is illustrated with one or more generally good quality black & white photos. Many rare & experimental pieces are included. Regrettably, it omits the many unofficial or Ersatz arms that were
used during the Civil War, & there is as yet no single reference that covers this diverse & interesting aspect of the topic. However, the book is thorough as regards the earlier periods, covering many weapons that seldom if ever are found in the US. A multi-lingual edition would increase the book's appeal, & it's to be hoped that more overseas publishers would take cognizance of this fact.
