Adrian Helmet - Can anyone ID it?

A friend has this adrian helmet that he is thinking of painting and generally monkeying with. Before he does, I thought I'd put a picture up to make sure he isn't messing up something he really shouldn't. Can anyone tell me anything about this helmet?

This is a French made Italian WWI helmet, the hole int he front could have been to afix a badge, but it is not the normal size and placement, it could have been made at a later date, with out the liner and chin strap, it is not a high value item, but a new coat of paint will remove any value (that is to say, it will drop from around $25 to $50 to nothing)

            Thanks guys.

I'll try to convince my friend not to monkey with it, but he's not a militaria guy so I may have limited success.
