    some questions

ok so I bought some militaria at a car show again, and some questions turned up. First up is a French Gasmask bag, I would like to know how these were attached to the person wearing them since I can't seem to find out how with this sideways-like strap-arrangement.

Second is this Swedish Gasmask bag, which period is it from, would it be correct to add to my WW2-era uniform?

And I know this is supposed to be in the ComBloc section, but I might just as well put it in this post. I bought these Russian trousers, but can't identify the pattern since I can't find any info on it. It might even be commercial but that wouldn't be so bad since I got it fo' cheap and I like the pattern, for now I called it funkycam, since the colors are so happy, I also do that with Swiss Alpentarn, we call it Discocamo here

    Cheers,
    Michel

    Michael,

The camo trousers appear to be the standard Russian military issue that was adopted in 1991. Russian stuff is usually well marked. Any labels or ink stampings inside the pants?

    Regards,

    Gordon

I tried to make a picture of the small label I found, but it didn't work for some reason, and I even tried almost all different settings. It's a small label with blue letters which says:
      MИHЛEГПPOM KA3 CCP Г. KYCTAHAИ
Ф-KA " БOЛЬШEBИЧKA (plus an unreadable letter)
      (Then some washing instructions pictures)
      XИM. BOЛOKHO 65% ШEPCTЬ 35 %

It seems to me this is just a label with materials and washing stuff on it.

The model trousers I've seen before, I just don't know the camo pattern, any info on that?

      Cheers,
      Michel

        Michael,

In his book "Cammouflage Uniforms of the Soviet Union and Russia 1937-to the Present" by Denis Desmond he refers to this camo pattern as the "Schofield" pattern. He also says there are two official colour variations; Forest (darker green) and Desert/Mountian (tan or Khaki). He also mentions that it is available commercially and these are unmarked. I doubt that this is the official Russian nomenclature for this cammo pattern and you could probably get this on the Communist Forum.

        Regards,

        Gordon

The Swedish bag would indeed fit a WW2 uniform. all of the bags are dated but on some the stamp has faded away.

For the French bag I cannot help, I have on in my collection but I have no idea how it was attached.

For attaching the French gasmask it would make sense that it would be in front of you on the chest the easier to access it in an emergency. Looking at the second photo the back of the bag would be toward you while you insert the right arm in the right loop and left in left. Can't see how long the tapes are but they would probably be tied around the waist. Epaulettes over the straps would keep them from slipping forward.

Thanks for the info on the Russian trousers, I now know that it's the VSR pattern, a color variation I didn't know before.
On the French gasmask pouch however, they definately attach it to the left leg since about ww2, as in the pictures in the first post here:
              http://vals-saw.easyforum.fr/gear-f1...guet-t1394.htm
Ths straps on mine are attached in a random way because I had to attach the loose parts myself and didn't know how.

              Cheers,
              Michel
