Translation of "Großes Goldenes Ehrenzeichen am Bande für Verdienste um die Republik" ?

"Large Gold" ??? "for Service to the Republic" is as far as my 100 word German vocabulary takes me.

This the highest grade of the Order. It can be awarded to Austrians or foreigners. The numbers awarded each year are usually rather small. It was first awarded in 1954. Did your friend get any information on who the award was presented to?

sorry, but it isn`t the highest grade,
the highest grade is:

Grossstern des Ehrenzeichens für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich.

the different to the shown piece is, that the grandstar have a gold painted star instead the silver ones.

The grandcross only awarded to austrian presidents, and for foreign chief of states.

the shown piece grosses goldene.... are award to austrian or foreign ministers/presidents of nationalcouncil
